It’s not too late to take advantage of this summer for treatment for your teen

With summer coming to a close, many families might be worried about the start of the school year. Especially for those teens who struggle with school – whether it be for academic or social/emotional reasons – this time of year can be especially challenging. It might feel for some like it is too late to use therapeutic treatment to help set their child up for success without interrupting the start of their school year. That’s not necessarily true, especially when considering programs like Summit Achievement, a therapeutic program with an academic component.

Why Our Hybrid Model – In our hybrid program, students are in academic classes 3 days a week. We are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).  Our campus has an academic building with four classrooms and we employ three full-time teachers and an Academic Director.  In our Achievement program students spend Monday-Wednesday of each week attending school during the day and doing an hour of study hall in the evening.

Our curriculum is individualized for every student based on a few factors: their learning profile, their academic history and at what point in the semester or trimester they enroll.  For students who come to us over the summer, it is common to retake classes that might have been a struggle the previous year, or to start/get a preview of classes in the upcoming year.

All of our curriculum is self-paced and is mastery based, which allows our students to work at their own pace and ensures they have a working grasp of concepts before moving onto the next topic.  Our Academic Director works with the student, their family, and their past (or future!) schools to determine the most appropriate curriculum.

Summit has a continuum of care that includes both Achievement (our hybrid wilderness/academic program discussed above) as well as Summit Traverse, our short-term therapeutic boarding school.  Students who enroll in Achievement have the option of staying in Traverse for an additional 2-6 months of treatment where they will continue with 5 days per week of academics and do week-long home visits to practice their newfound skills back home.  Learn more about Traverse and our continuum of care here!

Our model also includes extensive family work, highlighted by weekly family therapy, weekly parent-coaching and one overnight visit during the Achievement program.  Our parents are also supported by our monthly alumni support group and our monthly webinar with our Director of Parent Support.

Why it’s not too late – Because of our prestigious NEASC accreditation, our students can earn both full and partial credit while at Summit. This means that it is possible to “miss” the start of the school year for necessary treatment, but at the same time stay engaged in their academics.

Why it’s important – What makes our “school” different, is that we are able to support our students therapeutically as well as academically while they work in the classroom. For our students, their strengths, weaknesses, challenges, triggers or entrenched patterns that relate to their anxiety, depression or social/emotional issues, play out in a classroom setting.  Summit is different from other therapeutic programs because we are actively engaged in helping students identify these anxieties as they relate to school. Our unique model allows students to both better understand their anxiety and also begin to craft new coping skills and strategies. Our teachers are active members of our treatment team and our therapists offices are located in the academic building.
